What Is Water Damage?

Water damage is one of the most common causes of home insurance claims. Water damage may be caused by storm-related floods, bursting pipes, sewer backups, broken appliances, and more. Most homeowner insurance policies cover accidental water damage, while additional flood insurance can be purchased.

Steps A Homeowner Should Take After Experiencing Water Damage

The following are steps that a homeowner should take after water damage has occurred.

  1. Once water damage has been discovered, call a professional immediately.
  • Take photographs and videos before any changes are made to properly document the loss.
  • Mitigate, or protect the property, to prevent further damage. This may include turning off the water supply after a pipe burst. If you choose to replace the damaged pipe or plumbing component, be sure to keep it somewhere safe, so the insurance company has the opportunity to inspect it.
  • Move any undamaged possessions out of the area. Make an inventory of any damaged items, including the purchase date, amount paid, method of payment, and current-day value (if known).
  • Hire a water and/or mold remediation company to remove moisture and test for mold.
  • Have your insurance policy ready and notify your insurance company of the loss.
  • Keep receipts of any costs incurred related to the damages.
  • Cooperate with your insurance company, and provide documents as requested.
